Working between sculptures and installations

Nyakinyua is a sculptural artist who primarily works in ceramics. Born in Kenya & currently based in Iceland, she holds a Diploma in ceramics from Reykjavik School of Visual Arts.  Her practice is a relationship between culture, identity and fashion formations. Drawing inspiration from  African hair styles, textiles and beadwork. Through clay, she creates sculptural forms and installations. Working across  traditional coiling, hand building & slip casting techniques . Her practice is rooted in an ongoing dialogue between past and present, and between her Kenyan heritage and experience of living in Iceland. She is interested in expanding ceramics beyond the individual object into spatial and architectural background.
